well it does look like its dead, but for my suggestion on that is that you have to stop first the pruning, let it do some foliage first about a year or 2, if your planning to wire it now, don't!,(have got nothing to wire),cut hanging root that to your judgement is innapropriate(selecting an odd number to be left as part of the design) you have to have the primary branches first, that's the part where you need to grow those foliage to, after it has grown defoliage at winter's end, or early spring, then if you see the branches now it should be in odd numbers, never even,find the apex wire it all ,i mean all the branches , then look at simple bonsai specimens that have the same form as you want it in the net or beside this site, do as what it looks like or achieve as much as possible by the shape of what is appropriate.
